PIWI-druiven en andere hybriden verschillen sterk per ras en plek. Beyond Organic Wine ziet kruising als ecologische aanpassing, met minder middelen dan bij Vitis vinifera. Europese PIWI-rassen zijn in het oosten van Noord-Amerika niet altijd even bestand tegen schimmels als lokaal geselecteerde hybriden.
