Overzicht
Overview
The Ahr is a compact Anbaugebiet in Germany, south of Bonn, in a narrow valley in the Eifel. It is Germany’s largest contiguous red-wine area: about 80 percent of about 529 hectares is planted to black grapes. Spätburgunder dominates. Frühburgunder is an early Pinot mutation that survives here as a regional trait. Blanc de Noir, still white wine from red grapes, can make up about 20 percent of production.
Terroir
Terroir
The winegrowing strip along the river is about 25 kilometres. Steep terraces of slate and greywacke catch the light. About 68 percent of the vineyards have a slope of 30 percent or steeper. West, middle and east differ in height, wind and soil. Basalt also occurs in the east.
Culture and structure
Cooperatives are typical. Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoss-Altenahr, founded in 1868, is the oldest still-working wine cooperative in the world. About half of the area is farmed part-time. Average vineyard about 0.6 hectare. Dry-stone terraces go back to around the year 1200. After the flood of July 2021 the valley is still recovering for years.
