De Vitis vinifera is de Europese wijndruif. Het stamland ligt in Armenië. In Oost-Turkije bestaat nog een primitieve oervorm die hoog in bomen klimt.
De eerste nederzetting van de oermens ontstond circa achtduizend jaar voor Christus in Anau in Turkestan, aan de grens van Rusland en Iran.
In warm klimaat gisten druiven snel tot wijn. Of men toen al wijn dronk, is niet zeker, maar het verzamelen van trosjes is waarschijnlijk.
Meer dan driekwart van alle wereldwijndruiven is Vitis vinifera.
