Twee lagen

In Põltsamaa, Estland, hoort de wijntraditie bij fruit- en bessenwijn, niet bij klassieke druivenappellaties. Voor TheWijn.org en Nordicwijnen telt het onderscheid: de industriële merkgeschiedenis van Põltsamaa is grotendeels afgesloten; proeven en museum op het kasteel tonen die geschiedenis én wijnen van andere Estse producenten.

Two layers

In Põltsamaa, Estonia, the wine tradition is fruit and berry wine, not classic grape appellations. For TheWijn.org and Nordic wines the distinction matters: the industrial brand history of Põltsamaa is largely closed; the castle’s museum and tastings show that history and wines from other Estonian producers.

Geschiedenis 1920–2023

Omstreeks 1920 startte productie in Põltsamaa. In 1921 werd de oude brouwerij omgebouwd tot wijnmakerij; fruit- en bessenwijnen gingen in productie. Tijdens de Sovjetperiode bleef voedsel- en wijnproductie een regionaal merk; het museum toont onder meer buisvoeding voor kosmonauten.

Orkla Eesti (Põltsamaa) besloot alcoholische wijnen en glühwein tot eind 2023 te blijven maken en daarna te stoppen, om te focussen op voedsel en alcoholvrije dranken. Alcoholvrije glühwein kon blijven. De merknaam bleef behouden; de industriële wijnlijn is daarmee beëindigd.

History 1920–2023

Around 1920 production started in Põltsamaa. In 1921 the old brewery was converted into a winery; fruit and berry wines went into production. In the Soviet period food and wine remained a regional brand; the museum also shows tube food for cosmonauts.

Orkla Eesti (Põltsamaa) decided to keep making alcoholic wines and mulled wine until the end of 2023 and then stop, to focus on food and non-alcoholic drinks. Non-alcoholic mulled wine could continue. The brand name was kept; industrial wine production has ended.

Museum en kasteel

Op Põltsamaa Castle (Lossi tn 1b) horen museum, toren en Restaurant Oberpahlen bij het complex. De vaste tentoonstelling over modern voedsel en wijn uit Põltsamaa loopt van de jaren twintig tot recente productie. In de historische kelders zijn wijnproeverijen mogelijk; het aanbod is gericht op Estse wijnen van producenten die nu wel bottelen — niet op een doorlopende fabriekslijn van het oude merk.

Museum and castle

At Põltsamaa Castle (Lossi tn 1b) the museum, tower and Restaurant Oberpahlen belong to the complex. The permanent exhibition on modern food and wine from Põltsamaa runs from the 1920s to recent production. In the historic cellars wine tastings are possible; the offer focuses on Estonian wines from producers who still bottle — not on a continuing factory line of the old brand.

Estland nu

Estland kent een breedere wijncultuur van appels, bessen, rabarber en andere lokale grondstoffen, plus opkomende druivenwijngaarden. Visit Estonia en Estse bronnen wijzen erop dat de historische fabriekswijn in Põltsamaa is gestopt en dat elders in het land wel actieve huizen te bezoeken zijn. Voor Nordicwijnen is Estland daarmee relevant als noordelijke fruit- en bessenwijntraditie naast Scandinavië en Groot-Brittannië.

Estonia now

Estonia has a wider wine culture of apples, berries, rhubarb and other local crops, plus emerging grape vineyards. Visit Estonia and Estonian sources note that historic factory wine in Põltsamaa has stopped and that active houses elsewhere in the country can be visited. For Nordic wines Estonia thus matters as a northern fruit-and-berry tradition beside Scandinavia and Great Britain.
