Quinta De Azevedo
Quinta de Azevedo, gelegen in het groene Minho, vlakbij de rivier Cávado, is een landgoed met een uitzonderlijke historische waarde, waarvan de wortels teruggaan tot de stichting van Portugal in de 12e eeuw. Hoewel de geschiedenis veel verder teruggaat, werd in 1982 een nieuw hoofdstuk geschreven in de geschiedenis van Quinta de Azevedo.
Op initiatief van Fernando Guedes en zijn vrouw werd het plan om het emblematische en historisch belangrijke landhuis in de Minho nieuw leven in te blazen, in praktijk gebracht. Gedurende vier jaar legde het echtpaar zich met hart en ziel toe op de restauratie van het landgoed. De visie van Fernando Guedes was echter niet alleen om een architectonisch juweeltje te renoveren: zijn echte droom was om een wijnmakerij te creëren die een referentie in de regio zou kunnen worden.
Met altijd veel aandacht voor kwaliteit en het erfgoed van het landgoed, begon Quinta de Azevedo aan het einde van de 20e eeuw met de productie van eigen wijnen. Wat ooit een droom was, is vandaag de dag werkelijkheid geworden. De regio Vinhos Verdes, die sinds 1908 is afgebakend, ligt in het noordoosten van Portugal en wordt in het noorden begrensd door de rivier de Minho, die Portugal van Galicië scheidt , in het westen door de Atlantische Oceaan, in het zuiden door de rivier de Douro en de bergketens Freita, Arada en Montemuro, en in het oosten door de hooglanden van Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira en Marão.
Het is qua oppervlakte de grootste wijnbouwregio van Portugal, met in totaal ongeveer 24.000 hectare wijngaarden. De invloed van de Atlantische Oceaan zorgt voor een mild klimaat, dat wordt gekenmerkt door natte winters met gematigde temperaturen en relatief koele, droge zomers. Het klimaat varieert echter binnen de regio, die uit negen subregios bestaat: Monção en Melgaço, Lima, Cávado, Ave, Basto, Sousa, Baião, Paiva en Amarante.
De keuze voor de druivensoorten onderstreept de ambitie van het landgoed om het allerbeste van de regio te laten zien. De Alvarinho wordt door velen beschouwd als de belangrijkste Portugese witte wijnsoort, terwijl Loureiro een van de allerbeste soorten is voor Vinho Verdes. De wijnen uit deze regio hebben een relatief laag.

Quinta de Azevedo, in the green Minho, near the river Cávado, is an estate of exceptional historic value, with roots going back to the founding of Portugal in the twelfth century. Although the history goes much further, a new chapter in the story of Quinta de Azevedo was written in 1982.
On the initiative of Fernando Guedes and his wife, the plan to bring the emblematic and historically important manor in the Minho back to life was put into practice. For four years the couple put heart and soul into restoring the estate. The vision of Fernando Guedes was not only to renovate an architectural jewel: his real dream was to create a winery that could become a reference in the region.
Always with much care for quality and the heritage of the estate, Quinta de Azevedo began making its own wines at the end of the twentieth century. What was once a dream is reality today. The Vinhos Verdes region, delimited since 1908, lies in the north-east of Portugal. It is bounded to the north by the river Minho, which separates Portugal from Galicia, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the river Douro and the Freita, Arada and Montemuro ranges, and to the east by the highlands of Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão.
By area it is the largest winegrowing region of Portugal, with about 24.000 hectares of vineyard in total. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean gives a mild climate, marked by wet winters with moderate temperatures and relatively cool, dry summers. The climate varies within the region, which has nine subregions: Monção and Melgaço, Lima, Cávado, Ave, Basto, Sousa, Baião, Paiva and Amarante.
The choice of grape varieties underlines the estate’s aim to show the very best of the region. Alvarinho is seen by many as the leading Portuguese white variety, while Loureiro is one of the finest varieties for Vinho Verde. The wines from this region have a relatively low.
