Tesseron Cognac
Tesseron Cognac
In 1905 Abel Tesseron founded Maison Abel Tesseron to realise his dream, namely making his own Cognac. Abel’s son Guy Tesseron joined his father in 1940 and brought a sharp sense of business. Guy’s son Alfred Tesseron joined the firm in 2000 and together with his brother brought about the XO collection.
Since 2018 Noé Tesseron, son of Alfred, also contributes to this family success with his modern vision and new impulse. In this way the most subtle, complex and luxurious cognacs are made. Tesseron Cognacs are made from two of the most prestigious appellations in the Cognac area: Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne.
Grande Champagne is known for making the best Cognacs of the region, thanks to the limestone soil. The eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne needs years to develop the soft finish. The longer the ageing, the more aromas are released and the smoother they become.
Petite Champagne is made up of clay and limestone soil. Eau-de-vie grown on this soil needs less ageing for the soft finish. Tesseron Cognac is one of the last Cognac houses that uses the three original grape varieties: Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard.
Ugni Blanc is the main variety in all blends. The two exceptional varieties, Folle Blanche and Colombard, are hard to grow and produce only small crops, which is why they have almost disappeared in the region. Still it is Tesseron’s dedication to tradition that gives the extra dimension their Cognac offers.
The grapes are harvested at the beginning of autumn and fermented for a lightly strong, acidic wine with 9% alcohol by volume. Distillation is strictly controlled from the end of harvest through March of the following year. Tesseron Cognacs are double distilled in antique copper stills, also called Alambic Charentais, heated over an open fire.
Only the heart of the distillation is selected for ageing to cognac. Some eau-de-vie is distilled on the lees.
