Huis
House
Banfi was founded in 1978 by the Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani. The aim was a modern winery with advanced technique in vineyard and cellar.
After vinification comes a long rest on wood. More than seven thousand barrels and large foudres form the heart of the cellars. The estate lies south of Montalcino, to the Val d’Orcia. In total about 7100 hectares, of which about one third is vineyard. The rest is olive grove, fruit, wood and scrub.
There is also a small estate in Bolgheri, in the Maremma, among other things for Vermentino. The brothers bought Bruzzone in Piedmont, founded in 1860, now Banfi Piedmont, another 124 hectares.
Castello Banfi
Zoon John studeerde in Italië.
Eerste aanplant in 1977, nieuwe kelder in 1984. In totaal 100 miljoen dollar.
Castello Banfi
Banfi began as an American wine importer in New York, in 1919, by the Mariani family. Son John studied in Italy. John and Ezio Rivella met in the 1950s. Twenty years later Mariani asked Rivella to join a new wine project.
The brothers had built the import into a million-dollar firm. Their greatest success was Riunite Lambrusco in 1967, thereafter the most imported wine in the United States. Rivella was professor of oenology in Alba and a consultant in Italy.
The brothers bought about 3000 hectares and a medieval castle in Montalcino. That land had never had vines. The plan was 1000 hectares of planting, plus eight small plots for classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. First planting in 1977, new cellar in 1984. In all 100 million dollars. Around 1988 the Banfi style took shape. In 1990 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio d’Oro was the finest wine of the house.
Montalcino
Montalcino
Between simple Chianti in the straw flask and the finest Chianti lie many qualities. Castello Banfi makes Chianti and other wines counted among the best in the world.
South from Chianti to Montalcino the hills grow rounder and less wooded. Brunello di Montalcino and the less costly Rosso di Montalcino come from a clone of Sangiovese. Two well-known estates in the area are Biondi-Santi, by old methods, and Castello Banfi, by new technique.
The Banfi style rests on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, beside Sangiovese. Character comes from the different soils in Montalcino.
Aanplant
Planting
Trials showed that Viognier, Cortese, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto do not give the best result. Those vines are pulled and replanted with Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Pinot Grigio is planted in larger numbers.
The castle has a museum, a vinotheque and a restaurant. There is still room for a wine bar and an events hall. The castle was realised in two decades.
