Kenwood Vineyards begon in 1970 in het plaatsje Kenwood in Sonoma Valley, in Californië, in de Verenigde Staten. De voormalige Pagani Brothers Winery werd gerenoveerd. Voor het wijnmaken zijn er meer dan 125 roestvrijstalen tanks en staande eiken foeders. Circa 1400 vaten van Amerikaans en Frans eik dienen voor de houtrijping.
Sinds de Verenigde Staten inheemse rassen als Catawba en Concord verving door Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah en Grenache, ging de wijnbouw vooruit. De techniek op vooraanstaande wineries in Californië doet niet onder voor die van de beste Europese domeinen.
House
Kenwood Vineyards began in 1970 in the town of Kenwood in Sonoma Valley, in California, in the United States. The former Pagani Brothers Winery was renovated. For winemaking there are more than 125 stainless-steel tanks and standing oak foudres. About 1400 barrels of American and French oak serve for ageing.
Since the United States replaced native varieties such as Catawba and Concord with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Grenache, winegrowing has advanced. Technique at leading California wineries does not lag behind the best European estates.
Ligging
Sonoma Valley, ten noorden van San Francisco, kent vele microklimaten. Kenwood Estate heeft wijngaarden van in totaal negen hectare, op diverse plaatsen in de vallei. Eigenaar en wijnmaker Michael J. Lee kan zo de juiste druif op de juiste grond zetten. Elke wijn weerspiegelt de wijngaard.
Site
Sonoma Valley, north of San Francisco, has many microclimates. Kenwood Estate has vineyards totalling nine hectares, in several places in the valley. Owner and winemaker Michael J. Lee can thus put the right grape on the right soil. Each wine reflects the vineyard.
Cuvée per wijngaard
Rood: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir en Zinfandel. Wit: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc en Gewürztraminer. De oogst van elke wijngaard wordt apart gevinifieerd. De wijnen dragen de naam van het ras én van de wijngaard.
Cuvée per vineyard
Red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. White: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. The harvest of each vineyard is vinified apart. The wines carry the name of the variety and of the vineyard.
Michael J. Lee
Michael J. Lee is geboren in San Francisco. Na een marketingstudie begon hij in 1970 met zijn broer en zwager Kenwood Vineyards. Eerst deed hij algemeen management. Met hulp van een scheikundige bij het blenden bleek hij talent voor wijnmaken te hebben. In 1981 werd hij fulltime wijnmaker. Hij maakt ook wijn op Valley of the Moon en in Glen Ellen.
Volgens Lee begint een goede wijn in de wijngaard: de juiste druif op de juiste plaats. Zijn stijl benadrukt karakter van wijngaard en ras. Cabernet Sauvignon van de Artist-serie, Zinfandel en Sauvignon Blanc kregen veel lof.
Michael J. Lee
Michael J. Lee was born in San Francisco. After marketing studies he started Kenwood Vineyards in 1970 with his brother and brother-in-law. At first he did general management. With help from a chemist on blending he showed talent for winemaking. In 1981 he became full-time winemaker. He also makes wine at Valley of the Moon and in Glen Ellen.
According to Lee a good wine begins in the vineyard: the right grape in the right place. His style stresses character of vineyard and variety. Cabernet Sauvignon from the Artist series, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc won much praise.
Jack London
De schrijver Jack London vestigde zich omstreeks 1900 in de Valley of the Moon. In tien jaar kocht hij wijngaarden en experimenteerde hij met nieuwe landbouwtechnieken. Tijdens reizen liet hij het beheer aan zijn stiefzuster Eliza. Na zijn dood hield zij het beheer tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Er was te weinig mankracht. De stokken bleven dertig jaar onaangeroerd. Eliza’s kleinzoon Milo Shepard plantte opnieuw op 50 hectare. Vanaf 1976 vermarkt Kenwood de wijnen. In 1981 ging Marty Lee, broer van Michael, volledig in de wijngaarden en kelders van Jack London.
Kenwood runt het gehele goed. De bodem is vulkanische as. Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot en Pinot Noir gaan onder het label Jack London. De wolfskop op het etiket was Londons stempel op zijn boeken. Een groot deel van het goed is open voor bezoekers.
Jack London
The writer Jack London settled around 1900 in the Valley of the Moon. In ten years he bought vineyards and tried new farming techniques. On his travels he left management to his stepsister Eliza. After his death she kept it until the Second World War. There was too little labour. The vines stood untouched for thirty years. Eliza’s grandson Milo Shepard replanted 50 hectares. From 1976 Kenwood marketed the wines. In 1981 Marty Lee, Michael’s brother, went fully into the Jack London vineyards and cellars.
Kenwood runs the whole estate. The soil is volcanic ash. Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot and Pinot Noir go under the Jack London label. The wolf head on the label was London’s stamp on his books. A large part of the estate is open to visitors.
Massara
Massara is een terraswijngaard van Kenwood, op de zuidhelling van een heuvel. De rotsachtige grind- en kiezelbodem past bij Merlot. Na jaren oogst en blend besloot men in 1991 deze wijn apart te bottelen. De oogst bleek elk jaar van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit. De soepele Merlot heeft 13,5 procent alcohol. Aanbevolen bij pasta, lam, varken of rund.
Massara
Massara is a terraced Kenwood vineyard, on the south slope of a hill. The rocky gravel and pebble soil suits Merlot. After years of harvest and blend, in 1991 this wine was bottled apart. The crop proved of exceptional quality each year. The supple Merlot has 13.5 percent alcohol. Recommended with pasta, lamb, pork or beef.
