Leaf and colour
The leaf of Pinot Gris is three- to five-lobed, dark bluish green, and weakly hairy on the underside. The grapes are medium size and colour can run from green-yellow and dull blue to reddish.
Twee stijlen
Pinot Grigio, zoals men de druif in Italië noemt, produceert typisch frisse, heldere witte wijnen die men zo jong mogelijk drinkt.
Two styles
The two names stand for two wholly different styles. Pinot Grigio, as the grape is called in Italy, typically produces fresh, bright white wines drunk as young as possible. Pinot Gris, the speciality of Alsace in France, is richer and stronger than Pinot Grigio. Pinot Gris yields wines from dry and full to lush and sweet. Pinot Gris grapes can ripen impressively long if they grow on a warm base. Pinot Gris therefore thrives on volcanic soil. The best wines are made on the Kaiserstuhl in the southern Rhine plain in Germany. There it is called Ruländer. It can be a stylish alternative to Chardonnay.
