Chablis
Domaine Laroche maakt Chablis. Hier staat alleen Chardonnay. Het resultaat is een klassieke witte wijn, The True Chablis.
Chablis
Domaine Laroche makes Chablis. Chablis is a small winegrowing area in Burgundy, in France, so distinctive that the name almost sounds like a brand. It is one of the northernmost areas of France. The soil is chalk, part of a chalk layer that runs under the sea to England. That soil decides much of the quality of Chablis. Only Chardonnay grows here. The result is a classic white wine, The True Chablis.
Huis
Michel studeerde oenologie in Dijon.
House
The first wine of Domaine Laroche dates from 1850. Michel Laroche is the fifth generation. He exports to more than sixty countries. Thirty years ago the father of the present owner had 15 hectares. Michel studied oenology in Dijon. In 1967 he took over. Since then the vineyard grew to 326 hectares. He holds shares in Château de Chemilly, one of the few châteaux in the area. Domaine Laroche is the third-largest wine firm in Burgundy. The offices sit in Chablis in the ninth-century monastery L’Obédiencerie.
In 1980 the house sold 70 million French francs of wine, over 10 million euro. In 1997 the return was 145 million French francs, over 22 million euro.
Laroche invested 35 million French francs, over 5 million euro, in the Languedoc. After ten years of search Michel bought in 1985 near Béziers, 80 kilometres south-west of Montpellier, an estate with a manor from the early eighteenth century. He restored the house and moved six hectares of vines, among them Roussanne, Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier for white, and Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for red. The first harvest under the name Domaine La Chevalière followed in 1995.
The Greeks already grew wine grapes in the Languedoc around 400 BC. From the Middle Ages export to northern Europe rose. The Languedoc has 320,000 hectares of vineyard. Domaine La Chevalière holds 100,000 hectares of that for red wine and 15,000 hectares for white wine.
Wijnen
Wines
Chevalière Grande Réserve is red and white, the best cuvées into a classic Languedoc wine with fruit, depth and structure, aged in oak.
Chevalière Réserve follows the same idea, red and white, aged in stainless steel.
Cuvée Rosée is refreshing and elegant, from the best vineyards under a moderate climate, from the north and east of the Languedoc. The pale colour comes from a precise fermentation of two dominant varieties.
Vieilles Vignes completes the Réserve: red and white wines from vines at least thirty years old. The bottle follows an eighteenth-century Languedoc model, green, with the letters DLC for Domaine La Chevalière below the neck.
ISO 9002
ISO 9002
The management systems in Chablis and Béziers are both certified to ISO 9002. That makes Michel Laroche the first Burgundian wine producer with that recognition. In 1998 La Revue Vinicole Internationale named him Wine Man of the Year, for services to the wine trade.
