New wine countries on the shelf
Through growing international trade, from 1980 ever more overseas wines reach the European market. First mainly from California. After 1990 a broad offer from new wine countries follows. Taste and price make them a strong rival of familiar European wines.
Californian wines are often too dear for the grocery trade. Chile falls in a fitting price class and wins market share fast. After 1990 South Africa takes a large role. Australia grows steadily, Argentina follows. Morocco is a newcomer on the shelf. New Zealand has little volume and prices that are often too high for the Dutch grocery trade.
Productie buiten Europa
Production outside Europe
Many wines from new countries use the same popular grape varieties and look alike in production. Choice then falls mainly on price and partly on emotion. South African wines are very popular in the Netherlands for that feeling.
In new countries less strict rules apply than in the European Union. Irrigation is allowed, harvest moment is freer, acid may be adjusted and oak flavour can be imitated with wood chips in a bag in the wine, comparable to a tea bag.
Productiecijfers rond 2000
Production figures around 2000
France produces between 55 and 60 million hectolitres a year, more than a fifth of world production. Italy stands second with about 55 million hectolitres. Spain supplies around 40 million hectolitres. Spain has the largest vineyard area in the world, but a lower yield per hectare.
Germany reaches about 10 million hectolitres, Portugal between 6 and 7 million. Almost three quarters of worldwide production around 2000 still comes from Europe. About twenty percent comes from North and South America.
Europese wijnwetgeving
European wine law
Under the influence of French wine law European regulation grew. Not only production must meet strict rules, also trade and labelling.
