Wijnbouw en klimaat

Wereldwijde wijnproductie komt uit een beperkt aantal landen met geschikt klimaat. Wijndruiven gedijen in gematigde zones tussen 40° en 50° noorderbreedte en 30° en 45° zuiderbreedte.

Op het zuidelijk halfrond zijn Nieuw-Zeeland, Australië, Zuid-Afrika, Argentinië en Chili de belangrijkste wijnlanden. Op het noordelijk halfrond zijn dat onder meer Frankrijk, Italië, Spanje, Duitsland, Portugal, Griekenland, Roemenië, Hongarije, Bulgarije, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, de Verenigde Staten met vooral Californië, en Marokko.

Viticulture and climate

Worldwide wine production comes from a limited number of countries with a suitable climate. Wine grapes thrive in temperate zones between 40° and 50° north and 30° and 45° south.

In the southern hemisphere New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Chile are the main wine countries. In the northern hemisphere those include France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, Switzerland, the United States with California in particular, and Morocco.

Frankrijk

Frankrijk is internationaal nummer één in volume en kwaliteit. Namen als Médoc, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Champagne, Sancerre en Châteauneuf-du-Pape zijn wereldwijd bekend. Ongeveer de helft van de wijn in Nederlandse winkels komt uit Frankrijk.

Twee wettelijke systemen domineren: Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée voor de beste herkomstwijnen en Vin de Pays voor betaalbare wijnen, vaak uit Languedoc-Roussillon. Bekende AOC-wijnen in Nederland zijn onder meer Bordeaux, Médoc, Côtes du Rhône, Muscadet, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray, Beaujolais en Bourgogne. Champagne is mousserende wijn met tweede gisting op fles, Brut of Demi-Sec.

France

France is internationally number one in volume and quality. Names such as Médoc, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Champagne, Sancerre and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are known worldwide. About half of the wine in Dutch shops comes from France.

Two legal systems dominate: Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée for the best origin wines and Vin de Pays for affordable wines, often from Languedoc-Roussillon. Known AOC wines in the Netherlands include Bordeaux, Médoc, Côtes du Rhône, Muscadet, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray, Beaujolais and Bourgogne. Champagne is sparkling wine with second fermentation in bottle, Brut or Demi-Sec.

Spanje en Portugal

Spanje heeft het grootste wijngaardoppervlak ter wereld maar ligt qua volume op plaats drie. Sherry blijft populair in Nederland. Rioja, Navarra, La Mancha, Valdepeñas, Rueda en Cava winnen terrein. De meeste Spaanse wijn op de Nederlandse markt is rood, tinto.

Portugal biedt in Nederland vooral Port in vele stijlen, plus Dâo, Bairrada en Vinho Verde. Het land gebruikt veel eigen druivenrassen in plaats van internationale cépages.

Spain and Portugal

Spain has the largest vineyard area in the world but sits third in volume. Sherry remains popular in the Netherlands. Rioja, Navarra, La Mancha, Valdepeñas, Rueda and Cava gain ground. Most Spanish wine on the Dutch market is red, tinto.

Portugal offers in the Netherlands mainly Port in many styles, plus Dâo, Bairrada and Vinho Verde. The country uses many own grape varieties instead of international cépages.

Italië en Duitsland

Italië is na Frankrijk de grootste producent met grote stijlverscheidenheid. In Nederland staat Italië minder prominent. Populair zijn Soave, Orvieto, Lambrusco, Chianti, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo en Valpolicella.

Duitsland staat in Nederland bekend om witte wijn, vaak halfzoet of zoet met 9 tot 10 procent alcohol. Supermarkten tonen vooral goedkope wijnen uit Mosel, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Franken, Baden en Rheingau. Kwaliteitswijnen blijven bij veel consumenten onbekend.

Italy and Germany

Italy is after France the largest producer with great style variety. In the Netherlands Italy stands less prominently. Popular are Soave, Orvieto, Lambrusco, Chianti, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Valpolicella.

Germany is known in the Netherlands for white wine, often off-dry or sweet with 9 to 10 percent alcohol. Supermarkets mainly show cheap wines from Mosel, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Franken, Baden and Rheingau. Quality wines remain unknown to many consumers.

Oost-Europa

Bulgarije werd in de jaren tachtig snel populair in het grootwinkelbedrijf met duidelijke cépagewijnen en lage prijs. Later stokt het succes enigszins.

Roemenië produceert veel maar staat in Nederland in de schaduw van Bulgarije. Hongarije probeert met cépagewijnen voet aan de grond te krijgen. Oostenrijk herstelde na het wijnschandaal van 1985 met zuivere witte wijnen, maar prijzen passen slecht bij het supermarktkanaal.

Eastern Europe

Bulgaria became quickly popular in the grocery trade in the nineteen-eighties with clear cépage wines and low price. Later success stalls a little.

Romania produces a lot but stands in the Netherlands in the shadow of Bulgaria. Hungary tries to gain a foothold with cépage wines. Austria recovered after the wine scandal of 1985 with pure white wines, but prices fit the supermarket channel poorly.

Marokko en Californië

Marokko leverde vroeger goedkope wijn aan Frankrijk. Na koloniale tijd verdween wijncultuur, maar sinds de jaren negentig is productie hervat. Nederlandse schappen tonen cépagewijnen als Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Syrah tegen aantrekkelijke prijs.

Californië is de vierde producent wereldwijd. Napa en Sonoma blijven duur. In supermarkten staan vooral goedkope varietals uit Central Valley onder merknamen.

Morocco and California

Morocco once supplied cheap wine to France. After colonial time wine culture disappeared, but since the nineteen-nineties production has resumed. Dutch shelves show cépage wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah at an attractive price.

California is the fourth producer worldwide. Napa and Sonoma remain dear. In supermarkets mainly cheap varietals from Central Valley stand under brand names.

Chili, Argentinië, Zuid-Afrika, Australië

Chili veroverde in tien jaar een vaste plaats in Nederland met soepele, fruitige wijnen tussen Andes en oceaan. Druivennamen staan groot op het etiket.

Argentinië ontwaakt snel. Mendoza is het grootste gebied met irrigatie uit Andes-smeltwater. Malbec, Bonarda en Torrontés zijn kenmerkend.

Zuid-Afrika groeide vanaf 1990 explosief in Nederland, na Frankrijk zelfs het populairste land in het grootwinkelbedrijf. Nederlandsklinkende namen en beleving helpen mee. Districtsnamen zijn Stellenbosch, Paarl en Swartland. Pinotage is een lokale specialiteit.

Australië wint populariteit door constante kwaliteit en rijk, fruitig karakter met houtsmaak. Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon en Shiraz domineren het schap. Vijf grote producenten houden 83 procent van de productie in handen.

Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia

Chile won in ten years a firm place in the Netherlands with supple, fruity wines between Andes and ocean. Grape names stand large on the label.

Argentina wakes quickly. Mendoza is the largest area with irrigation from Andes meltwater. Malbec, Bonarda and Torrontés are characteristic.

South Africa grew explosively in the Netherlands from 1990, after France even the most popular country in the grocery trade. Dutch-sounding names and experience help. District names are Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. Pinotage is a local speciality.

Australia wins popularity through constant quality and a rich, fruity character with oak flavour. Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz dominate the shelf. Five large producers hold 83 percent of production.
