Frankrijk

Bordeaux is het grootste kwaliteitsgebied met circa 115 000 hectare AOC. Naast topchâteaux levert AC Bordeaux betrouwbare tafelwijn. Bourgogne loopt van Chablis tot Mâcon met elegante pinot en chardonnay. De Rhône is populair om soepele, kruidige rode wijnen, vooral Côtes du Rhône en Villages. Languedoc-Roussillon aan de Middellandse Zee verbeterde sterk sinds 1990 met goede prijs-plezierwijnen. De Elzas maakt witte cépagewijnen achter de Vogezen. Langs de Loire komen droge en zoete witte, rosé, rode en mousserende wijnen voor.

Bergerac ten oosten van Bordeaux lijkt op bordeauxstijl maar is vaak goedkoper. Beaujolais draait om gamay met Beaujolais Nouveau en tien crus.

France

Bourgogne runs from Chablis to Mâcon with elegant pinot and chardonnay. The Rhône is popular for supple, spicy red wines, especially Côtes du Rhône and Villages. Languedoc-Roussillon on the Mediterranean improved strongly since 1990 with good price-pleasure wines. Alsace makes white cépage wines behind the Vosges. Along the Loire dry and sweet white, rosé, red and sparkling wines occur.

Bergerac east of Bordeaux resembles Bordeaux style but is often cheaper. Beaujolais turns on gamay with Beaujolais Nouveau and ten crus.

Italië

Chianti uit Toscane tussen Florence en Siena is fris en pittig. Bardolino aan het Gardameer is een zomerse, fruitige rode wijn. Soave bij Verona is zacht fris van garganega. Lambrusco is licht mousserend en halfzoet, populair bij pizza.

Chianti from Tuscany between Florence and Siena is fresh and spicy. Bardolino on Lake Garda is a summer, fruity red wine. Soave near Verona is softly fresh from garganega. Lambrusco is lightly sparkling and off-dry, popular with pizza.

Spanje en Portugal

Rioja langs de Ebro staat bekend om rode tempranillo met vanille door eikenhout bij Reserva en Gran Reserva. Navarra lijkt op Rioja tegen lagere prijs. La Mancha op het hoogplateau levert soepele, fruitige rode wijn. Valdepeñas is een enclave in La Mancha met iets vollere wijn van cencibel, verwant aan tempranillo.

Sherry uit Jerez is versterkte witte wijn, droog als aperitief of zoet na de maaltijd. Port uit het Douro achterland van Oporto is zoet door alcohol tijdens gisting. Ruby Port is jong en fruitig, Tawny Port rijpt lang op vat en wordt zachter en bruiner.

Spain and Portugal

Rioja along the Ebro is known for red tempranillo with vanilla from oak at Reserva and Gran Reserva. Navarra resembles Rioja at a lower price. La Mancha on the high plateau supplies supple, fruity red wine. Valdepeñas is an enclave in La Mancha with slightly fuller wine from cencibel, related to tempranillo.

Sherry from Jerez is fortified white wine, dry as an aperitif or sweet after the meal. Port from the Douro hinterland of Oporto is sweet through alcohol during fermentation. Ruby Port is young and fruity, Tawny Port ages long in cask and becomes softer and browner.
