Natuurkurk

Tot in de 21e eeuw was de natuurkurk de standaard voor wijnflessen. Door toenemende problemen met dit materiaal neemt het enthousiasme enigszins af. Een groeiend deel van de kurken blijkt geïnfecteerd met een schimmel die trichlooranisol vormt. Die stof kan de wijn in de fles besmetten. De wijn ruikt en smaakt dan muf, schimmelig of zelfs chloorachtig. Zo'n fles keur je af en drink je niet.

De kurkindustrie spreekt over een klein percentage slechte kurken, vaak een half tot één procent. In de praktijk ligt het percentage hoger en kan het groeien tot twee of drie procent. Daarom kiezen veel producenten buiten de klassieke wijngebieden voor andere afsluitingen.

Natural cork

Until the 21st century natural cork was the standard for wine bottles. Growing problems with this material cool the enthusiasm a little. A growing share of corks turns out to be infected with a mould that forms trichloroanisole. That substance can taint the wine in the bottle. The wine then smells and tastes musty, mouldy or even like chlorine. Such a bottle is rejected and not drunk.

The cork industry speaks of a small percentage of bad corks, often half to one percent. In practice the percentage is higher and can grow to two or three percent. That is why many producers outside classic wine regions choose other closures.

Kunststof en schroefdop

Kunststof stoppers zijn er in veel kleuren. Soms dient de kleur als signaal of marketing, bijvoorbeeld wit voor Sauvignon Blanc of geel voor Chardonnay. De schroefdop is een serieuze optie geworden voor wijn die snel gedronken wordt. Voor de thuiswijnmaker betekent dit: kurk vraagt schone opslag en controle op muf. Schroefdop en kunststof kurk zijn eenvoudiger bij kleine partijen.

Plastic and screw cap

Plastic stoppers come in many colours. Sometimes the colour serves as a signal or as marketing, for example white for Sauvignon Blanc or yellow for Chardonnay. The screw cap has become a serious option for wine that is drunk soon. For the home winemaker this means: cork asks clean storage and a check for mustiness. Screw cap and plastic cork are simpler for small lots.
