Tros en herkomst

Deze gemakkelijk te telen, uiterst productieve druif is enorm populair bij wijnbouwers in Zuid-Afrika. Het blad is grijsgroen met rode aderen. De druiven groeien dicht opeengepakt in lange conische trossen. De Chenin Blanc heeft een opvallend dikke schil. Het is waarschijnlijk dat deze druif uit de, oorspronkelijk in het wild groeiende, rode Lambruscadruiven is voortgekomen.

Bunch and origin

This easy, highly productive grape is hugely popular with growers in South Africa. The leaf is grey-green with red veins. The grapes grow packed in long conical bunches. Chenin Blanc has a strikingly thick skin. This grape probably came from red Lambrusca grapes that originally grew wild.

Loire en Californië

Hoewel de druif zachtronde witte wijnen voortbrengt, kan hij ook scherp en onaantrekkelijk groenteachtig smaken. Als de druif goed wordt behandeld, kan de wijn net zo fris en helder zijn als een lichte Chardonnay. In het Loiredal in Frankrijk is het een compleet andere druif, waarvan veel soorten droge, halfdroge en zoete wijnen worden gemaakt met een honingachtige smaak. Deze druif wordt ook wel Pineau de la Loire genoemd. De Chenin Blanc is tevens de basis voor mousserende wijnen, zoals Saumur en Crémant de Loire. In Californië werd de wijn vóór het jaar 1955 als White Zinfandel of Chablis aangeduid. Het waren meestal dikke, wat plat smakende wijnen, maar de kwaliteit is de laatste tijd enorm verbeterd.

Although the grape yields soft round white wines, it can also taste sharp and unattractively vegetal. If the grape is handled well, the wine can be as fresh and bright as a light Chardonnay. In the Loire valley in France it is a completely different grape, from which many dry, off-dry and sweet wines are made with a honeyed taste. This grape is also called Pineau de la Loire. Chenin Blanc is also the base for sparkling wines such as Saumur and Crémant de Loire. In California the wine was labelled White Zinfandel or Chablis before 1955. Those were usually thick, rather flat wines, but quality has improved greatly of late.
