Nieuwe wijnlanden
New wine countries
The main development in the last quarter of the 20th century is wine from non-traditional countries. Bulgaria was early, then Chile and South Africa. South Africa grew into the great sales hit of those years.
Sherry
Sherry
After Great Britain the Netherlands is one of the largest sherry markets, but year after year less sherry is poured. Within sherry demand shifts towards better quality and drier types. Fino gains ground from Amontillado.
From the end of the nineteen-seventies rosé went downhill and almost left the market. After a hesitant comeback sales rise again. Dry rosé grows strongest, but sweet and sparkling rosé also gain ground.
Duitse wijn
German wine
German wine is under pressure. Once very popular, but at the start of the 21st century the share of white German wine fell under twenty percent. Germany struggles with image and recognition. Shelf offer becomes narrower, though better German wines return in supermarkets.
Franse wijn
French wine
France remains the strongest wine country on the Dutch market, despite market-share loss since the nineteen-nineties. Vin de Pays, especially from Languedoc-Roussillon, keeps the position stable with good price-quality. Many of these wines stand as cépage wine on the shelf, with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah on the label.
New wine countries in detail
Chilean wine is an outright success. Argentina follows. California came early but remains pricey for the supermarket channel. Australia grows with a marked taste and good price-quality. New Zealand stays small and dear. Morocco is a cautious newcomer after vineyard loss after colonial time.
South Africa is the largest success story since the nineteen-nineties. Emotion and experience play a part in buying. Dutch-sounding wine names do strongly with consumers.
Cépage wines, in English varietals, mention the grape variety prominently on the label. Geographic origin stands in the background. Cépage is French for grape variety, variety is English.
First variety wines came from Bulgaria, California and Chile. Later Australia, South Africa and Argentina followed. Producers stress that the variety sets the character and use the name as marketing. Ten to fifteen grape names are easier to remember than thousands of geographic names that look alike, such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Pouilly-Fumé or Gevrey-Chambertin and Givry.
Under pressure from new wine countries European producers follow too. French Vin de Pays, Italian Sangiovese and Spanish Tempranillo often carry the grape as name. Popular white varietals are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Popular reds are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
